Why Doesn't ChatGPT Recommend My Business? The 7 Real Reasons

ChatGPT doesn't recommend your business because it can't find, read or trust enough information about you in the sources it checks. AI platforms build local recommendations from a small set of signals: your website's ability to directly answer questions, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, structured data, and a handful of directories per industry. Fix those and you become recommendable. Here are the seven reasons businesses stay invisible, in order of how often we see them.

1. Your website talks about you instead of answering questions

AI lifts from pages that answer "how much does X cost" and "do I need X" directly. Brochure copy like "trusted local experts since 1998" gives AI nothing to cite. The businesses being named have pages that read like answers, because that's what an answer engine needs.

2. Your prices aren't published

Cost queries are among the most common buying questions people ask AI. AI cannot cite prices that don't exist online, so it names your competitor who publishes a range. Publishing even a broad fee range puts you in answers you're currently absent from.

3. Your Google Business Profile is half-finished

ChatGPT's search layer and Google's AI Overviews both lean heavily on Google Business Profile data: categories, services, Q&A and reviews. A profile with two photos and no services list reads as a business AI can't confidently describe.

4. You're missing from the sources AI trusts for your industry

Every category has a small set of sources AI repeatedly cites. If your competitors are in them and you aren't, the answer writes itself without you. This is the most invisible problem on the list because you can't see it without measuring which sources AI is actually reading for your category.

5. No structured data

Schema markup is how you tell machines, unambiguously, what you do, where you do it, and for how much. Without it, AI is guessing from prose. With it, your business becomes machine-readable fact.

6. Bing has never heard of you

ChatGPT's web search runs substantially on Bing's index. Most Australian small businesses have never opened Bing Webmaster Tools, which means the platform answering millions of buying questions is working from an index you've never optimised for. The setup takes 15 minutes.

7. The internet says wrong things about you

Old addresses, dead service lines, outdated hours: AI repeats whatever it finds, and wrong information reads as untrustworthy. Part of visibility work is correcting the record at the sources AI reads.
